Keep Your Smoothie Low in Sugar

It’s another one of those ”National” Holidays: National Smoothie Day! We are definitely celebrating this made-up holiday.

To celebrate I’m serving up your basic mixed berry smoothie, I’m breaking the veggie trend and going basic. The mixed berry smoothie appeals to people of all ages and can be made in various ways .

But, no matter what kind of smoothie you are making be mindful of your ingredients. Use 2% or high protein Greek yogurt, they curb hunger longer than nonfat. Never use a mixed berry yogurt. NEVER use canned fruit and always read the ingredients on your protein powders. A lot of protein powders are packed with sugars and are high in calories. Look for a protein powder that has less than 5 carbs a scoop.

Stay away from artificial sweeteners – they trick your brain and have been proven to cause weight gain. Opt for all natural honey if you want to add a bit of extra sweetness. Some recipes call for orange juice. I never put more than 3 tablespoons of OJ per 20 oz. smoothie. The reason? Sugar!

If you are adding matcha, flax, chia or hemp seeds use 1 to 2 tablespoons. Drink your smoothie promptly if adding chia seeds because if you let it sit for an hour the seeds absorb the liquid and it gets nasty.

My motto is to keep it natural and simple. This mixed berry smoothie is a good base to start. Add seeds, yogurt or whatever you enjoy.
