Is there such a thing as a healthy addiction? I am addicted to acai bowls. What is a Açai berry? Pronounced: ä-sä-e, the acai berry come from the Amazon Rainforest not Amazon.com. The berry contains antioxidants, Omega 3,6,9 fatty acids, and amino acids to mention just a few of the benefits.
Acai bowls, like the one pictured above, are perfect for breakfast, lunch or a snack. They are gaining in popularity and can be found at the more “health conscious” smoothie boutiques or juice bars. The main ingredient is a frozen acai base; then you add your toppings. There are a few standards like berries, bananas, granola and kiwi. However, I have seen peanut butter and yogurt added to the bowl. It is whatever your heart desires. The bowls can be a little pricey. Depending on where you go they are about $8.00 for a bowl. But, isn’t all healthy food more expensive?
Determined to keep the cost down, I decided trying to Çmake my own acai bowl at home. You can purchase frozen acai paste in the freezer section of the grocery. It takes a few times to perfect the recipe but, nonetheless, I can now eat acai in the convenience of my own home without spending $8.00 a bowl. The cost works out to be about 1/3 of the price. But, there are those times when you just want to get out and indulge. I have come to enjoy these healthy bowls so much that I have given up the frozen yogurt! You still get the same cold treat without the sugar and guilt. If you haven’t tried an acai bowl, what are you waiting for?
